Certified EKG Technicians (CET) continues to play vital roles in the United States specially with the continuos rise of prevalence rate of heart disease across the nation. My aspiration to be a Certified EKG Technician is driven by not only obtaining the skills to read an EKG and operate an EKG machine, but also the ability to provide service to patients and be a part of the growing technology in medicine. The development of EKG machine has not only made the diagnosis of
heart diseases more accessible, with its portability, EKG machines are now also found in ambulances and in the homes of patients.
Pumping blood, supplying oxygen and nutrients, the heart is one of the most vital organs in our body. Although reasons might be obvious on why a having a healthy heart is important, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one out of four Americans die due to heart disease (2017, para.1). With this in mind, diagnosis plays an important role in not only providing the necessary care plan for a patient, it also provides information about the patient’s anatomy. Seeing that electrocardiogram (EKG) tests play a vital role specially here in the U.S., the demand for Certified EKG Technicians (CET) are now higher more than ever.
Although my certification will provide me with high-demand skills and career growth in the future, I aim to be an EKG technician because it will also allow me to provide services to patients in an important stage of their care plan and it will also allow me to be a part of a growing technology in healthcare.
Performing EKG tests to patients, allows me to provide service to patients during an important part of their care plan(EW). The EKG test is non-invasive procedure that measures the electric activity of the heart by placing 10 electrodes to the chest and limbs. An EKG provides vital information about the heart, ”including irregularities with heart rate and rhythm, inadequate blood and oxygen supply, structural abnormalities and evidence of previous heart attack, or one that is in progress” (Mayo Clinic, 2018, para.1-2). The EKG results plays an important role in the patients route to optimum health because it provides physicians with the necessary information needed to diagnose if a patient has a heart disease and from there, establish a plan of action.
According to the CDC (2017), “heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States” (para.2). EKG tests serve an important role specially in the U.S. because of the high prevalence of heart disease. Most risk factors are modifiable and that is why early detection can greatly decrease the rate of contracting heart disease. Being able to help in this part of the patient’s care is rewarding knowing that I am providing an important service to their health.
Having the knowledge to operate an EKG machine and understand electrocardiograms will be a reminder to me of how far technology has lead us to multiple medical advancements in the past, and the many more advancements that I as a CET, will be able to first-handedly experience now and in the future. Throughout the years, the EKG machine has allowed us to learn more about our heart’s structure and how it functions, allowing us to detect heart conditions before it even advances with serious unmanageable complications (AlGhatrif & Lindsay, 2012, para.1). The combination of EKG machines and EKG recordings has both been important diagnosing tools in medicine and with our current modern world, has been developed to be more efficient and portable. The birth of the first clinical electrocardiogram was in 1902 by a Dutch physiologist, Dr. Willem Einthoven, his device weighed 600 pounds (AlGhatrif & Lindsay, 2012, para.8). Today with its portability, our EKG machines are found in ambulances, clinics, hospitals and in the homes of patients who need constant heart monitoring. Because of the developments of EKG machines over the century, it has given medicine a technology able to diagnose and monitor heart conditions in locations where it is greatly necessary which allows healthcare
providers to enhance and improve care for their patients which I desire to partake in.
Being a Certified EKG Technician (CET) will allow me to obtain skills that are in highdemand in the healthcare field thus not only helping me expand my horizons, but also (allowing me to be a well-rounded healthcare provider?) providing me with opportunities for career growth in the future. According to the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) , a CET will have “the credentials nearly all healthcare employers require to perform the critical tasks of administering electrocardiograms (EKGs), as well as Holter monitoring and stress testing” (2018, para.1). In addition to acquiring knowledge about electrocardiography and efficient operation of EKG machines, it will also allow me to be a well-rounded healthcare provider.
As the prevalence rate of heart disease continues to rise in the United States, EKG technicians continues to serve a vital role in healthcare. Being a Certified EKG Technician, I will be able to be a part of a growing career in health care that provides an important and meaningful service to patients, and as well be a part of a growing technology which developments over the century has helped many people specially when it comes to diagnosing heart diseases. Being able to be a part of healthcare, not only to serve patients, but to enhance patient care through the use of technology as important diagnosing tools, is what greatly inspires me to be a Certified EKG Technician.
