My primary reason for me to advance my professional career to become an Electrocardiograph (EKG) technician is due to my late stepfather. He had passed away due to a heart failure several years ago, I had always wondered if a EKG technician was able to identify irregularities in his heart sooner, a doctor would have been able to treat him and provide him with a proper patient care plan and he could have been alive today.
There is a need for qualified EKG technicians in America as the rise of the aging population is growing. According the Center for Diseases Control (CDC), every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a heart attack and one of five heart attacks is a silent heart attack and the person is not even aware of it. Also, about 610,000 Americans die of heart disease in the USA each year, which is equivalent to 1 in every 4 deaths and is the leading cause of death for both men and women.
Base of these statistics I can now see that becoming an EKG technician is a very important job and it will help me make a difference to save lives for many patients in the future. Since I am a Certified Nursing Assistant now, I can see that moving towards this kind of meaningful career will be easy for me. First, I will be able to work directly with the patients to determine or monitor their EKG rhythms their most important organ, their hearts. I will be involved as part of their essential care for those who experience heart conditions, during physical exams and in preparation for surgery. Secondly, I will be able to expand my horizons as a CNA and branch out into the cardiac health field. Finally I truly believe this career path will also help me find some closure with the death of my step father that I will help other families fathers, sons, brothers, uncles to detect a heart problem and be a important part of their patient care of saving their lives.
